I'm at a point now where I'm not entirely sure what to do/try next, so if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. This new installation of Windows is also having these problems. I have bought a new SSD since originally building the system and have installed a clean copy of Windows that I've been running for around 3 weeks.I have updated my BIOS to the latest revision supplied by Asus.This adapter does not appear in Device Manager, even when "Show hidden devices" is enabled. I have gone in to the system BIOS and have disabled this adapter.

Unfortunately it's not very good (I gave it a fair shot when my system was brand new for about a week or so, but the drivers for this also cause unusual stability issues in Windows,Įven before plugging in the USB adapter). This MB has a WiFi adapter built in to it.
Go to Power Options, and set "USB selective suspend" to "Disabled". 
I have also done this for all of the devices called "USB Root Hub".

Unplug the device and uninstall the drivers, then install drivers supplied by RealTek.

This sometimes happens after the PC has been sleeping, but not always (it can also happen in the middle of normal use). The adapter will show as disabled after rebooting though. Going in to to Device Manager and attempting to disable the device will cause Device Manager to crash and I have to reboot. Unplugging the WiFi adapter, waiting a few seconds, and plugging it back in again does not always resolve the problem. Once I left the PC in this state for 1 hour just to see if anything would happen and it still did not reboot. It will just be stuck on the "Rebooting" screen. Sometimes loss of Internet connectivity will prevent the PC from rebooting normally. When this happens, I can enable Airplane Mode, but cannot disable it without rebooting. Other applications (e.g: Edge, Steam, Spotify) do not. When this happens, Google Chrome will crash. This may appear as a "limited" connection and clicking the WiFi icon in the task bar will show Windows attempting to reconnect to the network Randomly dropping the WiFi connection (other devices like my phone do not exhibit loss of connectivity). I get the following problems intermittently and can't seem to replicate them on demand: In March I built a new PC, and on this new rig this adapter appears to be causing some very strange behaviour in Windows 10. On my previous PC (also Windows 10) this adapter worked very well. Last year I bought a USB WiFi adapter: a BrosTrend AC1200 (RealTek 8812AU). Second, I am curious if there are any settings in the Device Manager entry for the adapter that would improve performance? I would am running them them in the 5GHz 802.11ac mode, both for better speed and to free up the 2.4GHz band for all the other devices that only support that band and aren't as performance-sensitive.This is a bit of a long story as I've tried quite a lot of things to try and resolve the problems I am having. The Alfa website lists only one Windows 7 driver, and it is six months old - messages to their tech support have gone unanswered. I've also seen the "rtwlanu.sys" cause a BSoD, which makes me suspect the drivers are buggy.įor starters, I'm having a hard time finding the most up-to-date drivers for the RTL8812AU chipset used by the AWUS036AC - strangely, there seems to be no listing for it on Realtek's website. What perplexes me is the variability of signal strength I'm seeing from hour-to-hour and day-to-day, and the fact that rebooting the computer almost always seems to improve the connection. I am connecting them to a TRENDnet TEW-812DRU AC1750 dual-band wireless router. I've purchased several Alfa AWUS036AC 802.11ac dual-band wifi USB adapters for use with three Windows 7 computers I have, and I am looking to get better performance out of them.
